Main ingredients:  gongura/ sorrel leaves and fresh prawns/ shrimps.

Cook time: approx 45 minutes.

INGREDIENTS:

  1. 2 cups tightly packed sorrel leaves/ gongura (neatly washed).
  2. 400 grams fresh prawns/Shrimps (peeled and deveined).
  3. 2 medium onions (chopped).
  4. 4 green chilies (chopped).
  5. Salt- to taste.
  6. 1 pinch turmeric pwd.
  7. 2 tbsp red chilly pwd.
  8. 1 tsp ginger garlic paste.

TO TEMPERING:

  1. 2-3 tbsp oil.
  2. 2 dry red chilies (cut into 2 pieces).
  3. 1 tsp cumin seeds/ jeera/ jeelakarra.
  4. 1 tsp split black gram/ urad dal/ minappapu  (skin less).
  5. 1 tsp mustard seeds/ rai/ aavaalu.
  6. 2 sprig curry leaves.

  1. In a cooking vessel, mix neatly washed prawns along with ginger garlic paste, salt, turmeric pwd and 1 tsp red chilly pwd. (Add little water if the prawns are too big).IMG_7347 - Copy

  2. Let it cook with lid on low flame until the water evaporates.
  3. Mean while, in another cooking pan, place neatly washed plucked sorrel leaves and 1 cup of water.IMG_7367 - Copy

  4. Bring it to a boil, add chopped onion, green chilies, remaining red chilly pwd and salt.
  5. Cover with lid and simmer for 10 -12 minutes or till the leaves soften.

  6. Mash the mixture with wooden masher to a course paste.

  7. Now add cooked prawns mixture (add little water if necessary) to it.
  8. Cook covered by stirring occasionally on low flame for about 10- 12 minutes. (So that the prawns absorb the tangy flavor of sorrel leaves/gongura).

  9. When the curry starts to thicken turn off flame and keep aside.

  10. Heat oil in a small frying pan, add red chilly and flakes garlic. When they start to change the color, add cumin seeds, mustard seeds and split black gram and let them splutter.
  11. Add curry leaves and pour this temper over the gongura prawns mixture and mix well.
  12. Delicious gongura prawns is ready to serve. It goes well with steamed rice and roti.
