Main ingredients: ridge gourd/ beerakaya and split red gram/ kandi pappu.

INGREDIENTS:

  1. 1 small cup split red gram/ kandi pappu/ tur dal (skin less).
  2. 2 medium ridge gourds/ beerakayalu (wash, peel and cut into Small pieces).
  3. 1 medium onion (chopped).
  4. 3 green chilies (slit length wise).
  5. Salt- to taste.
  6.  1 pinch turmeric pwd.
  7. ½- ¾ tsp red chilly pwd.
  8. Small lemon sized tamarind.

TO TEMPERING/ Tadka/ Taalimpu:

  1.  1 tbsp oil.
  2.  1 red chilly (cut into 2 pieces).
  3.  2 flakes garlic (slightly crushed).
  4. 1 tsp mustard seeds/ rai/ aavaalu.
  5. 1 tsp cumin seeds/ jeera/ jeelakarrra.
  6. 1 tsp split black gram/ urad dal/ minappappu (skin less).
  7. 1 sprig curry leaves.

METHOD:

  1. In a deep vessel, place the washed split red gram/ kandi pappu along with 1 ½ cup water and bring it to a boil and simmer for 5- 10 minutes or till the red gram is half cooked.

  2. Now add chopped ridge gourd, chopped onion, green chilies, salt, turmeric pwd, red chilly pwd and tamarind and mix.
  3. Cover with lid and simmer for another 7- 10 minutes or until done.

  4. Remove from flame and mash slightly with wooden masher. Keep aside.

  5. To tempering, heat oil in a small frying pan, add red chilly, crushed garlic.
  6.  As they begin to change color, add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, split black gram and let them splutter.

  7. Now add curry leaves and pour the temper over the mashed dal mixture and mix.

Serve hot with steamed rice with fresh ghee, papad or any veg fry.
