Main ingredients: chukka koora/ green sorrel leaves/ khatta palak and split red gram.

Preparation and cook time: 35 minutes.

INGREDIENTS:

  1. 1 small cup split red gram/ kandi pappu/ ( skin less).
  2. 2 -3 small bunches chukka koora/ green sorrel leaves/ khatta palak (remove big stems, wash and cut into small pieces).
  3. 1 medium onion (sliced).
  4. 2 green chilies (slit length wise).
  5. 2 medium tomatoes (chopped) (optional).
  6. Salt- to taste.
  7. 1 pinch turmeric pwd.
  8. ¾ tsp red chilly pwd.
  9. Very small piece tamarind/chintha pandu.

TO TEMPERING:

  1. 2 tsp oil.
  2. 1 red chilly (teared).
  3. 2 flakes garlic (slightly crushed).
  4. ¾ tsp cumin seeds/ jeera / jeela karra.
  5. ¾ tsp mustard seds/ rai/ aavaalu.
  6. split bengal gram/ pachi sanaga pappu (optional).
  7. 1 tsp split black gram/ urad dal/ minappappu.
  8. 1 pinch asafoetida.
  9. 1 sprig curry leaves/ karivepaku.

METHOD:

  1. In a wide cooking vessel, place neatly washed split red gram/ kandi pappu along with 3 cups of water.
  2. Bring it to a boil and simmer for 10- 15 minutes or until the split red gram is almost cooked.

  3. Add sliced onion and green chilies and cook for a minute. (You can also add 1 chopped tomato).

  4. Now add chopped chukka koora/ green sorrel leaves, salt, turmeric pwd, red chilly pwd and tamarind piece and mix.

  5. Simmer for just 2 minutes (these leaves are very sensitive and they boil very fast).

  6. Turn off flame and mash slightly with wooden dal masher and keep aside.

  7. To prepare tempering, heat oil in frying pan on low flame.
  8. Add red chilly, crushed garlic flakes and sauté until they start to change color.
  9. Add cumin seeds, split black gram and mustard seeds, split bengal gram and saute till they crackle.
  10. Add asafetida, curry leaves and pour this temper over the chukka koora pappu and mix.
