INGREDIENTS:

  1. 1 cup split red gram/ tur dal/ kandipappu.
  2. 1 medium size lemon.
  3. 1 small onion.
  4. 2-3 green chilies.
  5. Salt- to taste.
  6. 1 pinch turmeric powder.
  7. 2 big pinches red chilly pwd (optional).
  8.  2 tsp oil.
  9. 1 red chilly (tear into 2 pieces).
  10. 2 flakes garlic (slightly crushed).
  11. ½ tsp cumin seeds/ jeera/ jeelakarra.
  12. 1 tsp split black gram (skin less)/minappappu.
  13. ½ tsp mustard seeds/ rai/ aavalu.
  14. 1 sprig curry leaves.

METHOD:

  1. In a pressure cooker, place neatly washed split red gram (tur dal).
  2. Add just enough water to the dal till it is immersed. Pressure cook up to 3 whistles.
  3. When the pressure released, mash the cooked dal slightly with ladle and keep aside.
  4. Preparing the tempering by heating the oil in a pan, adding red chilly, crushed garlic, mustard seeds, cumin seeds, split black gram and frying till they crackle.
  5. Add the chopped onion and green chilly bits, curry leaves and fry for a few seconds.
  6. Add salt, turmeric pwd and red chilly pwd and then pour the tempering mixture over the cooked dal and mix well.
  7. Finally add the lemon juice and mix. Serve hot with steamed rice or rotis.
