Main ingredients: par boiled mutton curry, raw rice.
Cook time:35- 45 minutes.
Serves3 – 4 people.

Traditional Mutton Button


  1. Raw rice-2 cups.
  2. Water-3 ½ cups.
  3. Coconut milk- ½ cup (or coconut paste-4 tbsp).
  4. Mutton curry ½ kg. (Almost cooked).
  5. Mint- 20 leaves.
  6. Tomatoes-4 medium. (Cubed).
  7. Coriander leaves- 4 sprigs. (Chopped).
  8. Spices- 4 cloves, 2 cardamom, 1” cinnamon stick and 2 bay leaves.
  9. Ghee- 2 tbsp.
  10. Oil-2-4 tbsp.
  11. Lemon juice- 2-3 tbsp.


  1. Heat oil+ ghee in a cooking vessel, add spices and sauté. Add sliced onion, green chilies, ginger garlic paste and mint and sauté for 2 minutes add chopped tomatoes and sauté till soften.Traditional Mutton Button
  2. Add coconut paste or coconut milk and water and keep it on a high flame. Bring it to a boil.Traditional Mutton Button
  3. Add washed and drained rice and mix well. Bring it to a boil, reduce flame and cover with lid.Traditional Mutton Button
  4. Let it cook for 7- 10 minutes or until the rice is almost cooked.Traditional Mutton Button
  5. Add mutton curry, coriander leaves and mix carefully. (do not over mix, as the rice might break).Traditional Mutton Button
  6. Cover with lid and let stand for 7-10 minutes.
  7. Turn off flame. Drizzle lemon juice and mix carefully (do not over mix as the rice might break).Traditional Mutton Button

Serve hot with raitha.
