Main ingredients: red gram split, fenugreek leaves.  Cook time: 30minutes.

For 4 people.

FENUEGREEK LEAVES

  1. Red gram (split) – 1 cup.
  2. Fenugreek leaves/ methi/ menthi koora- 3 cups (neatly washed and plucked).
  3. Tomato-1-2 medium- (chopped).
  4. Onion- 1 medium (chopped).
  5. Green chilies- 4 (slit).
  6. Water-3 cups.
  7. Tamarind- big lemon size.
  8. Coriander leaves- 4 Sprigs (chopped).
  9. Salt- to taste.
  10. Turmeric pwd- 1 pinch.
  11. Red chili pwd-1 ½ tsp.

FOR TEMPERING:

  1. Oil-2 tbsp.
  2. Dry red chilies-2.
  3. Garlic cloves- 2 (slightly crushed).
  4. Cumin seeds/ jeera/ jeelakarra – ½ tsp.
  5. Mustard seeds/ rai/ aavaalu-1 tsp.
  6. Black gram (split)/ urad dal/ menappappu- 1 tsp.
  7. Curry leaves-10.
  8. Asafetida/ hing/ inguva- 1 pinch (optional).

METHOD:

Place neatly washed red gram (split) along with water, in a cooking vessel on medium heat. Bring it to a boil and simmer for about 10- 15 minutes or till the dal is half boiled.

Now add chopped fenugreek leaves, chopped tomato, chopped onion, green chilies, tamarind, salt, turmeric pwd and red chili pwd and mix

Bring it to a boil, reduce the flame, cover, simmer for 10 minutes or till the dal mixture is almost cooked.

Turn off flame and mash it with ladle until the dal mixture is well combined. Keep aside.

  1. Heat oil in a small frying pan, add dry red chilies, slightly crushed garlic cloves, cumin seeds, mustard seeds and black gram and let them splutter, add asafetida and curry leaves, turn off flame. Add this to the dal mixture and mix.

Serve hot with roti or white rice and papads.
