Main ingredients: tomatoes, split red gram.  Cook time: 30 minutes.

TOMATO DAL SERVING BOWL

INGDIENTS:

  1. Red gram/ tur dal/ kandipappu- 100 gms.
  2. Tomatoes-5 medium (chopped).
  3. Salt- to taste.
  4. Turmeric powder- 1 pinch.
  5. Red chili powder- ¾ tsp.
  6. Onion- 1 medium (chopped).
  7. Green chilies- 2-3 (split) .
  8. Tamarind- small lemon size.
  9. Coriander leaves- 4 sprigs. (chopped).
  10. Water- 1 ½ cups.

FOR SEASONING:

  1. Oil- 2 tbsp.
  2. Red chilies- 2-3 (tear).
  3. Garlic flacks-2 (slightly crushed).
  4. Cumin seeds/ jeera/ jeelakarra- ½ tsp.
  5. Mustard seeds/ rai/ aavaalu- 1 tsp.
  6. Split black gram/ urad dal/minappappu- 1 tsp.
  7. Asafetida- 1 pinch.
  8. Curry leaves- 2 sprigs.

METHOD:

  • In a pressure cooker, add neatly washed tur dal, along with chopped tomatoes, chopped onions, green chilies, turmeric powder, red chili powder, tamarind, coriander leaves and water.
  • Pressure cook up to 3-4 whistles.
  • When the pressure released, remove the lid and add salt to the tomato dal and mash with ladle until the tomato dal is almost soften. Keep aside.

    • Heat oil in a small frying pan, add red chilies, slightly crushed garlic cloves, cumin seeds, mustard seeds and split black gram to the oil.
    • When the seeds splutter, add asafetida and curry leaves and turn off flame.  Add this tempering mixture to the tomato dal and mix well. Transfer to a serving bowl.
    • Serve hot with rice or chappatis.
