Main ingredients: ribbed gourds  and split green gram.

INGREDIENTS:

  1. Ribbed gourds-  ½ kg/ Beerakayaklu  (neatly washed, pealed and chopped).
  2. Split Green gram/ Pesarapappu (skin less)-100 gms.
  3. Salt- to taste.
  4. Water- 2 cups.
  5. Onion- 1 medium (chopped).
  6. Green chilies-3. (chopped).
  7. Coriander leaves- 3-4 sprigs.  (finely chopped).
  8. Red chili powder- 1 tsp.
  9. Turmeric powder- 1 big pinch.

FOR TEMPERING/TADKA/TAALIMPU:

  1. Mustard seeds- 1tsp/ rai/ aavaalu.
  2. Cumin seeds-1tsp/ jeera/ jelkarra.
  3. Split black gram (skin less)- 1tsp. urad dal/ minapappu.
  4. Curry leaves-2 sprigs.
  5. Oil- 1-2 tbsp.

COOKING METHOD:

            In a cooking vessel ,  place the split green gram along with water and Bring it to a boil on medium flame, add finely chopped ribbed gourd, chopped onion, chopped green chilies, salt , red chilly powder, chopped coriander leaves  and turmeric powder and combine.

Reduce flame and  cover with lid and simmer for 10- 15 minutes or till the ribbed gourd pieces are almost cooked. Turn off heat and keep aside.

To make tempering.  heat oil in a small frying pan. Add cumin seeds, mustard seeds and split black gram and let them splutter. Add curry leaves and turn off heat. Add this tempering mixture to the cooked ribbed gourd and green gram mixture and combine well.
