GONGOORA PAPPU

INGREDIENTS:

  1. Hemp (sour) -4 medium size bunches. (plucked and neatly washed).
  2. Split red gram (skin less) – 250 grams. (1 cup).
  3. Onion- 1 medium (chopped).
  4. Green chillies- 5. (split).
  5. coriander leaves – 2 tbsp (chopped).
  6. Curry leaves- 2 strings.
  7. Turmeric powder- 2 big pinches.
  8. Salt- to taste.
  9. Red chilli powder- 3 tea spoons.
  10. Tomatoes -2 medium (chopped).

FOR TEMPERING:

  1. Oil- 1-2 tbsp.
  2. Garlic flakes -2-4. (slightly crushed).
  3. Red chillies- 3 (tear into 2 pieces).
  4. Mustard seeds- ria –aavaalu- 1 tea spoon.
  5. Cumin seeds- jeera- jeela karra- 1 tea spoon.
  6. Split black gram (skin less)- urad dal- minappappu- 1 tea spoon.
  7. Asafoetida- 1 big pinch. (optional).
  8. Curry leaves- 2 strings.
  9. Water- 2-3 cups.

    COOKING INSTRUCTIONS:

    Place neatly washed  split red gram in a heavy bottomed cooking pan and boil along with water for 10- 15 minutes or till half cooked. Now add plucked hemp, chopped onion, green chillies, turmeric powder, salt, half of the curry leaves and red chilli powder and mix well.

    Bring the mixture to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for about 10-12 minutes or till the dal is almost cooked. Turn off flame and mash with ladle until the dal is almost softened.  And keep aside.

    Heat oil in a small frying pan. Add red chillies, crushed garlic flakes, cumin seeds, mustard seeds and split black gram and let them splutter. Add asafoetida and curry leaves and turn of flame. Pour the tempering over the dal mixture and combine.

    Serve hot with rice or roti.
